8-31-2010 Every year the news media tracks hunter deaths, including hunters who die of natural causes, in order to give the impression that hunting is a dangerous activity.
Check this out: Mushroom hunter "massacre" claims 18 lives in Italy
This guy was standing in my yard this morning. Now, since all the does get pregnant every year I knew they were around, but this is only the second time I have seen antlers in my yard in 20 years.
8-29-2010 I was just reading an article about copper line entitled "Copper - Deadliest Tactic"
Now, copper is a deadly tactic. I like copper and I sell copper. Saying that, I have a real problem with "deadliest".
My thinking is that the deadliest tactic is the one that puts fish in the boat today. I have had days when copper was deadliest. I have had more days where downriggers were deadliest, or divers, or lead core. I have even had days when the deadliest tactic was to go in and get breakfast and get back out that evening. The deadliest tactic??? FLEXIBILITY. The ability to adapt to the current conditions and put fish in the boat.
Anyone who tells you that one method, bait or lure works all the time (except perhaps Red Hook Tackle Spoons) is full of you-know-what.
You should be ready to run downriggers, with and without stackers, both free and fixed. You should be ready to run divers, high and low. You should be ready to run mono, braid and wire divers and lb. balls. You should be ready to run flat lines, 2 color, 3 color, 1/2 core, full core and yes, copper. You should be ready to run spoons, plugs, flashers and dodgers, both with flies and bait. You should be ready to run 1 mph for finicky Kings on the bottom to 3.5 mph for screaming rainbows on the surface.
Mostly the deadliest tactic is to get out and fish.
8-19-2010 Congratulations to Marc Sobeski of the "Waverly" and Todd Pollesch of the "Ku'ula", the two boats that won the Red Hook Tackle prizes for being the first boats in at the 10th Annual Brew City Salmon Tournament. Congratulations also to Jason Woda of the "Trophy Hunter", the grand prize winner of $3,680!
You may have noticed I have done some house keeping on the website. Many customers on the road are using netbooks and other devices that like the narrower format better. I have just removed a bunch of unnecessary stuff to try and make your shopping experience quicker.
8-15-2010 10th Annual Brew City Salmon Tournament was a big success. They had 115 boats registered and 92 boats weigh-in fish!! There were 850 fish registered for a total weight of 6,814 pounds. Wow! I had a flock of turkeys in the yard today, I counted 3 adults and 12 young birds. Scenes from the 2008 Brew City Tournament
8-11-2010 10th Annual Brew City Salmon Tournament is this weekend. This is the tournament that I spend the most on sponsoring each year. It is a great event with over 100 boats. Each boat gets a gift bag including a Red Hook Tackle Spoon, and $100.00 each for the first two boats in with limit by 12:00 p.m. From Red Hook Tackle
I know this music is too new for us old guys, but the guitar player is my fishing buddy's son and Jerry is the guy with the mustache who pops up in the video a couple of times. http://www.spike.com/video/every-avenue-tell-me/3447866 You think you're having a bad day?
8-6-2010 I just received the above from the NEWGLSF. I urge you to print out the post card and sign it and send it to:

8-4-2010 I just heard about this: http://www.sheboyganpress.com/article/20100710/SHE0101/7100449/Boat-in-fatal-capsizing-snagged-net

8-3-2010 A boat hit the pier head Saturday night in Manistee, it looks like no one was hurt. Let's all take a little time and slow down and be safe out there.
7-29-2010 Who else (in Michigan anyway) wishes it was August 4 and the election was over? I used to make a list of everyone who "robocalled" me and vote against them, but now they all do it.
Remember to get out and vote. There are countries where American kids are dying to bring the right to vote to people. The least you can do is show up.
7-28-2010 One of today's headlines: "Tiger escapes from trip to the vet". For a minute I thought that Tiger Wood's wife was trying to get him neutered.
7-26-2010 It looks like the "Orange Muffin" took a prize winning Lake Trout in the Salmon-a-Rama. Details and photo's to follow.
Milwaukee/Bender 7/23-4 Weather on Fri and Sat made for a late start. However it seems the cloud cover kept them from their night time feeding binge and we had a great daytime bite. Friday launched at Bender around noon with lines set in 30fow trolling south on that contour. First to go was Brad’s Lady Bug on a 5 color. Action was pretty much constant for the next 4 hours. We tried to stay in the clean water fishing close to the off color line. The bait was suspended in balls surrounded by hooks. The screen looked like a simulator. Temp down 24 ranged from 47.5 to 50.5. Speed on the Depth Raider 1.9-2.1. Things that fired White Opti/LBB down 24, SWR Brad’s Wonderbread down 18 fired 8 times. Brad’s Shamrock SWR down 20 fired 3 times. Brads Wonderbread 3 set dipsy 50loc 3 times. White Opti/LBB 1.5set Wire Dipsy 45loc 2 times. 3 color and Red Hook double orange crush, 5 color Red Hook Dbl Purple Spook, 6 color blue/silver/white # 4 Andy Reeker. Lost track of hits and misses on what going about 16 for 24 by 415PM. We did not expect such good action that time of the day and were out primarily to check for water temps and bait for the next mornings Cash on the Line contest. We were excited by the prospect of fishing that area south of the power plant the next morning. Next AM more of the same bad weather. They delayed the start to 6 AM. About ½ hr later more lightning in the area and the contest was cancelled. Our 14mi round trip sucked up some gas and had only 5 minutes of all the lines out. Went to breakfast and headed back to Bender and launched after 10. Had a 7 color wrap with a nice king on Silver Streak Michelle Pfeiffer that my little buddy Shane snuck out. We had to pull one side to get it in. Then mistakenly trolled north do to good report from Wet Dream. Took one on 6 color and Andy Reeker as we hit the Milwaukee brown water and much to my surprise 24’ rigger and white Opti/LBB fired in the brown water. Marks there were nothing like Friday south of there so pulled and ran back getting there about the same time as yesterdays wild action. It happened again with dbls, triples and 1 quad. Not as much bait and hooks but temps still 49-52 down 24 in 30fow with same Depth Raider speed of 1.9-2.2 working. The clean and dirty water had mixed and no distinct line and water clarity was something that I would have tried to avoid fishing. However, plenty of bait so plenty of fish. Due to “dirty water” changed to brighter baits with Brad’s Pink Magic and Lady Bug on SWR riggers 16 and 18 down doing a lot of the damage and also on 5 color. Red Hook double orange crush on 4 color, blue/silver J on3 color and reg Red Hook Sister sledge on 6 color. Wire Dipsy with MT Dew/orange and LBB 44loc and White Opti/glow/gold with LBB the flashers/flys that fired. Red Hook reg Orange Muffin on 3set 44loc fired at least 4 time and one 4yr old took out 7 and 5 color. Finally got a nice brown on mono board and #3 jointed silver J. Shane boated the big king of the yr taking a 19.5# on SWR rigger. Went something like 25 for 30 something and done by 445. Sure wish the contest had been able to be fished as this day, unlike many days we had the fish in the same place 2 days in a row. Shane’s arms held up well and reels in the fish like the veteran he is. Just going into 8th grade and can set the boat, drive and finally convinced that tuna works. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
7-23-2010 It looks like a fishing boat off of Big Sable Point rescued an air crash survivor at about noon today. Way to go!

We are now restocked with "EZ-Core" lead core line in stock in Lead Core Line. I have been running both the 1/2 core and full core versions and have been very happy with it.
I hope all our friends and customers in Wisconsin (or anywhere else for that matter) are OK today after the wicked weather we have been having. Time to start thinking about the 10th Annual Brew City Salmon Tournament.
7-22-2010 I removed my previous comments about the incident at the Ludington tournament for two reasons. First, after reading the hysteria on some of the boards, I don't want to be contributing to that. Second, It looks to me like the officials and the paper are doing a fine job of covering this and I don't really have anything to add. I will just repeat that this sort of thing makes me sad and takes the fun out of these competitions.

The first fish in my boat in a year, back on July 9
I want you to know I am printing this fishing report verbatim, I am not capable of such comedy. They ended up 10th overall and 4th in the Master Angler, 13th for Lake Trout, and 7th for Brown Trout at the Salmon-a-Rama, which is excellent in my book with a field that large.
You REALLY have to check out the video.
Milw 7.16-18: Our Rocky Balboa Quest"
Hot tip - if you are using a certain temp/speed probe that has a wire coil and a special cable and what I would call a "cool name" (think about that), and are having trouble with the signal dropping out, wet the coil.
On my boat I have a Fish Hawk and I tried my new probe this past week. It worked very well with my old "840" display. My feelings on the product are mixed. It looks like they finally got the probe right. I really like that it is "backwards compatible" with their older products. I mean I really really really like that. Most companies like to obsolete stuff so you have to buy all new.
On the other hand, I have a 9 year old unit with very few hours on the probe, because the old ones kept failing. This is probe #3, which is complete BS.
Let's just say they are on the road back into my favor, if this probe lasts they may someday be all the way back.
In case you were wondering what a 41# Brown Trout looks like (I don't know what it was caught on)
7-19-2010 We have a lot of reports and information for you from the past weekend below.
What's hot for Red Hook Tackle? Pink Tiger, Broken Nose, Chicken Pox and Green Tiger are all performing well for us, and it is reflected in sales. No "sales job" makes a customer order 4 each of a color in regular and magnum, only fish can do that.
The hot rig? For us, believe it or not in Ludington, 400 and 450 feet of copper. No luck on 300 feet or full core of lead, just those ultra long rigs.
After the morning bite? Bait rigs. You don't have to mess with frozen herring any more, there are some good artificial options out there now.
Racine 10-17July I needed daily naps to keep up the pace of fishing both ends of the day except for the blessing of bad weather on Thursday so I could sleep in. I had a great time fishing with lots of different friends over the course of the Salmon A Rama tourney. Didn’t fare as well as I hoped in the Super Sweepstake and Two On A Boat. Super sweeps boated around 30 fish and still had 4 smaller fish as part of our 12 fish weight placing 23rd. The next day for Two in A Boat only had 9 bites and 5 fish. Where do they go and why???? Just one of those throwbacks from Sat would have us cashing a check! We did have some Lake Trout luck getting the fish of the day and ending up 7th. Also placed 9th in the highly prized Master Angler. Everyone seemed to like the new cash only prize format and the way Salmon A Rama was run having been taken over by the Salmon Unlimited Club of Racine. No more TVs and outboard motors. The participation for both Super Sweeps Stakes and Two On A Boat were up quite nicely and ticket sales and sponsors supported all the cash prizes and the $10,000 first prize to Roger Hellen for his record breaking brown trout of 41.5#. I fished the area he caught it many times that week and wonder how close I might have come to that monster. We had some crazy wild times and some long times between bites. As usual the before sun up was the best and #4 glow Js or glow spoons on mono, 2, 3 and 4 color were very productive along with shallow dipsys 30-45loc with a variety of glow spoons and occasionally glow flasher/fly. Riggers with SWR worked better than normal all day long taking would you believe, 14 bites one rod on a Shamrock Brad’s Cut Plug SWR down 24 in 35-50fow on Sat. On bright days Brads Jack Pot on rigger and 3 color, Pink Magic on 5 Color and Lady Bug on 4 color. Overall Wonderbread worked best wherever I put it but mainly SWR, Dipsy and 8 Color. Red Hook spoons that worked best early AM were no surprise with regular and magnum Green Tiger, Broken Nose regular and magnum and pink Tiger where ever I placed them. One surprise was regular Broken nose got hit so many times that I left it on my 6 color and worked well all day some days. The regular dbl purple spook on 5-8 colors still produces. Sister Sledge regular and magnum worked in both bright and overcast daytime action. We didn’t have a lot of luck on Js after sun up so stuck to Brads cut Plugs and spoons. The cut plugs with roasted garlic tuna in oil seemed to take more bites after the morning flurry was over. I love it when the fish are in less than 50fow. However, some days despite good temp and lots of bait present, fish either moved or not biting. Sure wish I could figure out why!! Good fishing in one area was no guarantee that the fish would be there the next low light outing. Most of the time trolled 2-2.2 on the Depth Raider. However, had some good fish hit when slowed to 1.4-1.6 fighting fish. The temps were all over the map this week with wind changes. If there was a little bit of water in the mid 50s near bottom you could expect to find salmon all over the water column in low light. Despite that many days on the water I’m not fished out. My wife says “you’re definitely certified” and she could be right. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard

The Start Our 20# King
7-15-2010 Well, we ended up in the middle of the pack, with 4 OK fish and a 20# King that was just shy of the big fish.
It's 7 am and the "Ruboy Thursday" Tournament has been delayed another hour for weather.
I thought I would share some "vacation photos" from my buddy Skip in Ludington.
Hot spoon? Pink Tiger!
7-13-2010 From "Red Rider": "Bloody
nose Red Hook on the dipsy got this gal her first ever king and
several more after.
7-9-2010 Ludington, MI Fishing Report
Fishing was OK. We went 3 for 3, one nice 15#, one medium size fish and one "eater"
All the fish came in about 180 feet of water right off of the point. The big one came on full core magnum Chicken Pox, the medium came on a yellow tiger 75 ft down on a rigger, and the shaker on a Green Tiger on 100 yards copper. Pictures to follow.
The forward bilge fitting broke while towing the boat. These plastic fittings get brittle, and can cause major problems with your bilge pump spraying water inside your boat. Fortunately I think I can reach this one.
7-8-2010 I am writing this from the boat. I have some repairs to do in the AM, in the evening we will be hitting the fish hard.
Here is the catch from Sunday. Notice the missing tails as the DNR creel people were taking samples. Green Tiger was the stud this past 4th of July for numbers of nice Kings. This one was caught by my oldest son on a 6 color in 60 fow.
The picture date is wrong on my sons camera. Actually was July
2nd. These came back to back, the smaller one came on a regular Red
Hook blue dolphin on a long lead mono rigger down 38 and the bigger
one came on the PINK TIGER out 90 fol with a 3 set dipsy no ring on
PP. This fish was good enough for 5th place in our public derby this
past weekend.
It looks like Red Rider had a real good weekend, congratulations.
7-7-2010 I just had a charter from Green Bay ask about next day air shipping for Green Tiger spoons. I don't know what I could add to that.
7-5-2010 From a customer in Racine, WI: "The green tiger caught 6 of the 8 fish today.. Before the BIG one broke me off.. :-("
7-4-2010 Happy Birthday USA!
Well, the boat is in the water at the marina and is running great. Unfortunately the person who wrote that wave prediction below should be writing science fiction. I thought maybe yesterday early it would be at least OK, but when we cleared the pier heads we decided breakfast was a better idea.
7-1-2010 Well, I am off to the lake to get me my own pictures....
MID LAKE- 230 AM CDT THU JUL 1 2010
So...GO FISHING!!!!
Racine 6/29-30 Left the launch at 415 and headed north setting lines in 50fow south of Wind Point. Three lines in and a double on 4color Grey Ghost J #4 and 5 Color magnum Pink Tiger. After that it was so busy I can’t recall the details but I remember taking of both Magnum and Regular Broken nose on a number of fish on 6 color and 60’ 3 set dipsy. Wires dipsys with White/glow Opti and Trophy glow/aqua 75 and 85loc went 3 for four and later changed to green Opti and LBB 95 and 105 and went 2 for 4. When things started to quiet put on a Wonderbread from Brad’s and went 7 for 8 after 6AM SWR 30 and later 35 down. 8 color with same and 8 color with Brad’s green cut plug took 2 each. Put a Brads Pink Magic on 5 color for a bow and took 2 4yr olds after 8AM. Magnum Green Tiger on 6 color 2 for 3. Ended the morning with a triple at 945 Wonderbread SWR 35, regular Pink Tiger 3set 90loc and SWR 40 with Brads Blue Magic. Water temp down 25 in 50fow 48 in places with lots of bait. Best speed on Raider was 2-2.2. Started at 1.8 but double on the fast side of a turn so kicked it up a bit. A ripping current from the north made the cable angle the opposite you would expect trolling west in a NE wind. 7 Coho, 1brown(becoming a rare catch) and 12 Kings. Wed AM 330 launch found cold water again in 50fow off Wind Pt. The day started out the same with a 6 color getting pulled out of my hand with Magnum Green Tiger and 5 color and #3J Grey Ghost doubling with 3 rods out. We were on a north troll and unable to get all the rods set until 530 and eventually made almost a 5 mile troll before we could get turned. 6 color magnum Green Tiger, 4 color #4 Grey Ghost and 7 color Magnum Broken Nose busy. Ran 3 dipsys all AM flasher/flys and spoons and only one bite on 75’ 3 set Magnum Pink Tiger. 30’ Rigger with White Opti/crushed glow and Trophy glow/aqua 3 fish and 3 drive bys that didn’t release. When able to get the 8 colors out Brad’s Wonderbread and Lemon Lime each took 2. Wonderbread SWR only one today 35 down. Missed a very big leaping bow on 6 color Magnum Green Tiger. Pulled the 4 color and add a fullcore and Brad’s blue Magic and took 2. Got a call at 815 that the launch would be blocked off at 9 AM for a number of hours due to President Obama’s visit so quickly pulled lines boxing #19 in the process with 2 shakers returned. Speed again 2-2.2 and again doubled on the fast side. Had one triple today and no netter and hand landing around 7# Coho by gabbing the Magnum green Pink Tiger didn’t work. Ended with 5 Coho, 1 LT and 13 kings. Two superb days with great friends with tired arms. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
6-28-2010 I have a report from Tom Rasmussen of SUELEE Charters of Manistee. In the Pro/Am there this weekend the "Hot Rig" in his spread was the Yellow Tiger 85-110' down on a rigger, was on fire all weekend. He said he wished he had a 1/2 dozen or more.
The "Sarah Ann" is running, cleaned up and ready to head to the lake Wednesday. My plan is to fish the heck out of the boat over the next 2 weeks. In the area and want to fish? Give me a call and we will see what we can do.
6-23-2010 From Yesterday:
It was a fun day for me taking out the MadTaxi crew as 2 of them help me with my mechanical probs. They diagnosed and fixed my hydraulic steering issue as we fished and they worked the rods. On the water at 4 in 65 fow east of North Gap and set 4 leads first 3, 4, 5, 7. Before we could get the 4 dipsys out the 45loc 3 set regular Pink Tiger surprised us with a bow. Not often I get anything but a king in the dark. The 5 color with regular Dbl Purple spook took a nice king. 65loc wire dipsy regular Broken nose fired and finally stopped at 390. Just smile and keep reeling was my answer to “now what do I do?” It was much like Sunday, not fast and furious for that time of the day with 6 by 6. 7 color regular Broken nose took another nice king and a bow so put it on a SWR down 42. A little while later it fooled a king and repeated that plus a drive by and then silence. Called a couple friends and they both did well day before north by a few miles so trolled the 75-85’ contour for about 2.5hrs for 3 drive bys. Plenty of time to diagnose steering and query whether we should have left our original area. Finally 200 copper Brads blue/silver fired. As we went thru that area the first signs of last yrs PIA the green floating algae that clogs everything so I didn’t turn and kept going north and out to 95fow. Figured we might be in bow territory so put the regular double orange crush on 5 color and I was right. Full core and wonderbread (Radioactive Clown) next to go then drive by on 80loc regular orange muffin. Full core off again and again so put another out on the other side but remained silent. Last fish came on Opti Mountain Dew/orange and LBB 95loc 3 set. Late day bites seemed better at 1.7-1.8 vs. early at 2-2.2 with a little north current and 55-59 on 35’ Raider and 43-46 on 65’ Raider. I wondered if weather made the bite less aggressive as we had a least 6 drive bys and missed nothing hooked up with 12 for 12. 1 LT, 3 bows and 8 kings. Nice to have a day without weather issues. Those young ones let me sleep on the way home as we were out there for 9 hrs. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
6-22-2010 From "Red Rider": Sorry for the blurry
shot. Taking pics, driving in 3-5's don't mix.
Back on May 30 I ran a report by the "Norwejun Fishin Teem *Mad TaxSEA* " and I did not get this picture that went with it. Do you think someone hooked another kid on fishing?
"Next came a nice fight between my 7 year old boy (who thinks he's Jeremy Wade from "River Monsters") and a beautiful leaping acrobatic Bow on the also hot 7 color Pink Tiger (this set-up included a couple devastating misses too). With a little help from his uncle he brought that angry guy in "by himself" and has had a PERMA GRIN tattooed to his face ever since. He knows he and his fish are gonna be the STUD at this year's Memorial Day party"
You know what, if you land a fish that is like 1/2 your body weight and 2/3 your length, you are "DA MAN"!
6-21-2010 I thought the west winds from Sat would have cooled the water but found 57 near the bottom in 50 fow near the green can so moved out to 65’ before setting lines around 415. Had about 6 lines out and rigger White glow opti and white crinkle Trophy fly down 40 fired and grabbed the 30’ rigger and 6 color we were setting. Quite a mess in the dark but netted the fish, board, flasher/fly and spoon. Scrambling to get the ball of stuff cleared and stashed it for later. 5 color Red Hook reg double purple spook took a nice king then 7 color reg Broken Nose. Next was 3 color with #4 J Grey Ghost. Things quieted a bit by 0545 and wishing we had gotten setup more efficiently. 5 color reg Chicken Pox produce another dandy king. Riggers remained quiet and started to change from glows to other stuff but overcast skies so kept darks. Added another double purple spook to the SWR down 60 in 80fow took a nice coho. Mag Green Tiger wire dipsy 65loc got to 290loc on the first run. Around a 14# king that thought related to a bow after the 3rd jump. He must have had a heart attack after that as came in like it was wrapped but hooked in the mouth and quietly slipped into the net. There was lots of debris in 70-80fow so dodging lots of junk and hooked up a plastic bag that was a bear to land. When resetting the drag buzzed a bit and guessed just another stick but found a small king drowned on dbl purple spook. Missed another bottom scraping SWR dbl purple spook. 7 color with reg Broken nose another king then a coho and White glow opti and white crinkle Trophy fly down 70 took a small laker. Then a 4 hour 5 drive by unnerving quiet spell. My very patient crew made the most of it untangling the 6 color mess which was much appreciated because it was the first time in the water since the 6 color lost last trip. We worked a 2 mile quadrant 70-95 fow and marked plenty of fish but they were in a funk. Temp 48 down 70 and 2 mi south 45 at same depth trolling 1.8-2 on the Depth Raider with a small current from the north. Started pulling lines at noon and 5 color reg orange muffin another drive by. Got down to 3 rods left and the deep SWR dble purple spook grabbed by our 5th four yr old. Had only one board left in the water and it manage to grab it so second time of the day netting fish and board and sure glad it hung on. 1 LT, 3 coho and 9 kings. Nice to have a day with flat seas and no rain nor looming Tstorms. A great father’s day present for all of us. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
6-20-2010 Happy Father's Day!

In case you could not make out the spoon in the picture.....
Congratulations Sully, I am sending you a fish holder, it looks like you will be needing one this year.
That's almost the perfect spoon/fish picture
6-14-2010 Bob, fished the shelf in
Ludington Sat. am. 70'-80'. Pink Tiger 40' down on a rigger, Yellow
Tiger 60' down on a rigger, PK Carmel Dolphin on 5 color and 7
color. These 3 spoons caught 12 of the 13 fish boated. Congrats to
John, Scott, and Gregg for a near perfect batting average (lost only
1 fish). I gave my dock mate, Capt. Bill Warner of the
"WILLIE WONKA" charter boat the only 2 Pink Tiger spoons I had after
cleaning these fish ( he was running double trips on Sunday). He
reported Sun. am. that the "pink lady" help contribute to his nice
box of fish. I don't imagine I'll ever see those spoons
again!..............spoonless in Ludington (Jerry)
"Red Rider" Reid Nehls, another of our Pro-Staff told me today that he lost the Biggest Rainbow he has ever seen when a snap opened on a Pink Tiger. He was calling to get 6 more, so he must be a believer now. He fishes out of Wisconsin, but he was at a gathering on Lake Erie this past weekend.
6-11-2010 Now we have an app for that....

6-8-2010 We now have a variety of Stickbaits available, including Megabaits, Rapala® Original Floaters in F11 and F13 sizes and Bomber Long A's.
We left the launch at 0400 to pre-fish for the SU Opener with crew that included Rev. Dave who I hadn’t fished with in over a dozen yrs or so. Last time out was memorable for weather and the tornado just south of Algoma and so were we! Five early AM phone calls from friends reporting weather on the way and to be off by 8 made for a short trip. Does bad weather follow us? Set lines in 70fow a little south of straight out and didn’t get all the lines out and coho on 3 color and reg dbl orange crush. After that it’s kind of a blur and too much time has passed for my usual details. It was primarily leadcore with mag crushed ice gold on 8 color, reg grn tiger on 5 color, reg pink tiger on 7 color and reg white tiger on SWR down 42. We went 12 for 16, 2 LT and 10 coho and in before 8. Weather broke up and except for a little rain could have fished all day. Dang!! Compared notes with friends and sounded better north for kings so started the contest off wind pt in 65fow trolling NE. Thought wer were at a good spot as a bow busted a #3 JGrey Ghost 3 color while setting lines but escaped. Then took a bow on 5 color reg grn tiger, coho on pink tiger 7 color then wandered around for a long long time without a bite. Zigged and zagged out to 130 and took a nice king mag pink tiger swr down 52. Sitting on just 5 fish at 0915 and again wondering why so easy pre-fishing and now in the contest and we can’t find them. A buddy did and a call from Bonifide found us pulling and running. Just after reset mag grn tiger swr down 25 pulled a coho. Turning back with Raider speed 2.4(plenty of current) pulled a double on the fast side of the turn, 100loc wire grn Opti dble aqua and 5 color reg green tiger. Kept the speed up rest of the AM and rigger green Opti glow/grn and double aqua the stud down 42 went 4 for 8. Dredging the bottom in 65fow with mag Pink Tiger pulled another nice king. Put it on an 8 color and produced another king. Curt put on a reg Hey Baby on 8 color that worked and then on SWR down 25. We got to our target of 12 fish and switched everything to spoons. Blessed to have a wire dipsy 110loc and mag Bloody Puke take our 4 th nice king at 1220 just as getting ready to pull lines. It was out 300 ft so pulled the leadcore while fighting it so we could make it in on time. Delighted to finish 7th and big debt to Bonifide who was just a couple of pounds behind at 8th. You have to be where the fish are. Despite all the rain and wind Sat PM went back out Sun AM to the same area. Could only mange 13 mph running north. Much to my surprise the NNW wind changed the temp from 49 down 55 in 60fow to 53.8. Lots of bait still there but few hooks. 6 color and reg Broken nose first to go then mag Pink Tiger SWR down 40 a 3yr old. Green Tiger 5 color, mag Broken nose, 8 color reg Hey Baby, 3 set wire 100loc reg grn tiger, 8 color reg pink Tiger took the rest with 6 coho and 2 kings and only one escapee. Pushed the Raider speed 2.2-2.3 and pulled early as the 4 footers were too much like work. I tried to start my payback to the Bonifide but the unnamed friend overslept. Fortunately he had recruited another experienced friend or wouldn’t have been able to fxn as well as we did. We had 2 doubles and no OTTO pilot going into the waves. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard

6-4-2010 I have a couple of Megabait JB 90 Stickbaits available.
6-3-2010 I now have a variety of colors in sizes 20,30, and 40 of the Walker TripZ Diver.
Bob, fished with Phyllis Sat. afternoon 1pm to 6pm to take advantage of the beautiful weather. I knew that it wasn't the most productive time of day to fish but managed 6 bites and 3 boxed fish. Thank God for the Raider Blue Bubble spoon or it would have been just a boat ride. 5 bites on boards, one on a rigger 65' down. Managed to lose about 100.00 worth of gear due to a abandoned, unmarked, floating net (thanks). North of the stick 44.05.353 / 86.31.890, 250' depth took my Ridgeback and all terminal gear at 135' down. I guess I'll be placing an order with you soon. Congrats to Phyllis for her 1st, 2nd, and 3rd EVER fish! She had a blast and is a much better looking 1st mate than you. But don't worry, until she masters the Albright knot, your job is secure........Jerry 5-31-2010 Happy Memorial Day! Here's remembering our soldiers who served and hoping you have a great day with your families.
5-30-2010 This is a
fishing report from a buddy of Greybeard's and a real good customer.
It sounds like they had a real good time out there, except the sour
cream and onion chips part....Ayyye!!! ...COMES NOW the tale of
Milwaukee, McKinley, 5.22.10, a guest from Somalia........WORST
PIRATE ALIVE. Once again missed the Old Country
Buffet-style easy-pickins early morning bite and --after working on
the Mad TaxSEA to rectify last weeks fiasco-- didn't get lines in
until circa 2 pm. On board this time was a special crew including
the Somalian Pirate --being the DAPPER young "Fashion Fisher" he is;
clad in FABULOUS Banana Republic dress attire-- and a couple of our
young children. Soooo....a bit of a pleasure cruise again. After the
kids, and ESPECIALLY the resident SP, popped Dramamine like Emo kids
at a rave, we eventually made our way towards 90 fow and a nice
south troll. First fish came on a 7 color, 75 fow,
standard Raider Pink Tiger. Scrappy little chin to start the
day...with my 12 year old niece doing a nice job taking the helm on
that. Worked our way deeper and the next fire came on the copper, 90
fow, 200 feet behind the board, Lockeroom Viking. This would prove
our HOT ROD combo this day taking both half of our fish and a couple
of our misses. Another scrappy king circa 7 lbs. Continued to work the 75-100 range for
awhile and was laying a dipsy when--despite it being a BEAUTIFUL day
on the pond--I suddenly heard the familiar sounds of chum brewing up
somewhere in the boat. Always a good sound isn't it? One of the
kids, right? Nah. Sure enough...the Somalian --WORST PIRATE ALIVE--
only made it so far as a Lay's Sour Cream & Onion bag in his effort
to chum the fish that day. With that...he lost his fine Banana
Republic dress fishing threads, and his dream of EVER becoming a
REAL pirate when he grows up.....and I lost my desire to ever eat
Lay's Sour Cream & Onions again It worked though! Just after a nice
Kobe on the HAWT copper/lockeroom Vike combo, the Somalian Pirate
got a chance to REDEEM HIMSELF, and BE that pirate we always knew he
could be. Fully-cloaked in a life jacket on glass water, and pukey
dress pants and all...the SP, now green in color, DID IT!...brought
in a nice fighting king on the port wire dipsy, 1 set, 135 loc,
Raider Double Purple Spook. He immediately wrote home about it; and
thus saved his reputation and family name They are in turn sending
him new pants and a death pardon. Next came a nice fight between my 7
year old boy (who thinks he's Jeremy Wade from "River Monsters") and
a beautiful leaping acrobatic Bow on the also hot 7 color Pink Tiger
(this set-up included a couple devastating misses too). With a
little help from his uncle he brought that angry guy in "by himself"
and has had a PERMA GRIN tattooed to his face ever since. He knows
he and his fish are gonna be the STUD at this year's Memorial Day
party The copper/Lockeroom Vike yet again
fired another boated king, followed by an insta miss, and then we
ended our fine sunny day at sea with another chubby LT on our
outside dipsy, 3 set, 117 loc, blue Spin Doc/LBB. Everyone had reeled in a fish and had
had enough after that. Hence, we packed it in and called it a
pleasure day, 6 for 10; 3 chin, 2 Kobes, 1 Bow, primarily 75-100
fow. Smiles, memories, and teasing for all
Tight water bottles, 70's bean bags, and full coolers! The Norwejun Fishin Teem *Mad TaxSEA*
Milwaukee 5/26/10 Hit the water at 0445 heading south of the north gap setting lines in 55fow and heading NE. First to go 3 set Dipsy 80loc orange Tiger 8# king. Then 6 color and 7 color next with reg pink Tigers. Saw a ton of bait and marks in 65-75fow but not very fast action. Next to go a wire Dipsy 1.5 set 70loc White/glow Opti and LBB. Rigger fired SWR reg green Tiger down 80 and 5 for 5 by 615. Started to head east thinking of the 140s that worked for us Monday. Heard someone say they saw some fish on the surface so I put out a mono board with 80’ lead no wt and reg dble Orange Crush. 10 minutes later had a bow screaming out drag. Popped a coho 45 down SWR mag Broken Nose and that would fire once again later. Finally one of the Bechholds and Bluelongtail came thru 55loc coho. Sitting 9 for 9 feeling good as compared to the misses Monday. Talked on the radio of where we were and others were dry so crowded very quickly. I foolishly left to get out of the crowd and headed towards Monday’s waypt and nadda in the hour plus it took out and back. Got back to the productive water 70loc wire Dipsy and white Opti and dble Aqua another king. Bechold fired and missed. 7 color reg Redhook Sister Sledge but escaped as we were picking cotton wood fuzz which we had to do often today or wouldn’t get thru the tip. 70’ rigger looked funny and wondered if I picked up some trash. Well sort of, 4# LT on a white/glow Opti LBB. 8 color with reg Miss Thing drowned a small king. Bechhold fired again but this time a 6# king 55loc. Ran the same setup same depth on the other side and nadda. 5 color and reg dble orange crush had a leaper but much to our surprise a 5# king. 300’ 30# copper with spoons and flashers nadda and same for full core. Temp on the surface in 100fow 56 but 62 by 11AM. 43 down 60. Pushed the speed just a little at 2.1-2.2 on the Depth Raider. Still puzzled by all the marks 60 to the bottom and only took one salmon down deep. Best action 95-105fow. I think we might have any early June slow period as fish were scattered. One boat arrived late and trolled 80 to 200’ without a strike. Seems best if you find a few biters don’t leave looking for greener pastures. We pecked away at em ending 13 for 16 with 1 Bow, 1LT, 4 coho and 7 kings with 4 of them 7-9#. Michael had the hot hand today and his turn has the best fish. MyBoy had similar numbers including 5 kings 10-15# fishing the same local. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
Milwaukee 5/24/10 Coho action has been very good south of Milwaukee but not many kings and just the opposite for recent Milwaukee reports. Frequent fishing buddy Tim said he was ready for some kings so hit the water at 0445 and surprisingly almost enough light to go without running lights. Set up in 60fow east of the north gap and the first rip came while setting rods, a 3set dipsy with reg Orange Tiger 35loc an 8# king. Next a 4 color reg dble orange crush a 12# king. Then a 8+# bow down 70 white/glow Opti and LBB. Full core was next with reg Green Tiger and 5#king. Mag Bloody puke took a small king on 8 color. We were on a NNE course and at 80 by 6AM. Heard the king action was the typical short bite in 60-80fow and coho out deeper in 120-150fow. Nest two rips on wire dipsys White Opti’s and LBB and dbl aqua 110 and 90 loc and didn’t stick. Despite changing lures and depths, that was the end of wire action. In 142 fow blessed with another 9# king 100’ rigger and white/glow Opti and LBB. He acted like a 20lber and took awhile to succumb. We changed to a few more coho setups and the 55loc 3set dipsy with 8” Orange Bechhold and Bluelongtail was hot but couldn’t get them to stick going 2 for 5 and same setup on the other side at 41loc 1 for 2. Eight color took a 6#LT and 5 color another coho on Org Bechhold and Bluelongtail. I put one on the 4 color and nadda. 7 color reg Chicken Pox a coho and 120 rigger with White Opti/LBB another coho. 48’ SWR finally fired with a coho on reg Green Tiger. Finished with a drowned one on 5 color and Dbl Purple spook. The lights went out at 11 so headed in before noon. Spent most of the AM in 135-150 2mi north of the north gap with surface temp of 53 and 42.5 down 100. Trolled 1.9-2.1 on the Depth Raider. Marked very few fish all day. Had some bait on the surface early in 75fow and only near the bottom out deep. It sure was nice to hear the drags burn again. Ended 13 for 21, 5 kings, 1 bow, 1 LT and 6 coho. I was going to go back tomorrow but shifted to Wed as dense fog advisory in the forecast. While we were cleaning fish the fog rolled in and couldn’t see the north gap from the cleaning station and I didn’t want any part of that in the morning. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
On 5-21-2010 This net minding boat was out retrieving an abandoned net that had cost a charter boat at least several hundred dollars worth of tackle. The net was reportedly unmarked and adrift North of Big Sable Point.
5-24-2010 Finally got out of Ludington Friday night on my buddy's boat. Went 1 for 2, both hits very deep on a rigger. It was VERY foggy at the Big Sable Point.
We had a King work the hook off of a spoon leaving the split ring. I have never seen that before and I was wondering if any of you have. I should have gotten a photo. The ring had been twisted so the wires were separated a bit, but it was still intact. I should note that the lure had a treble hook. Drop me a line at bob@bobsoutdoors.com if you have any comments.
When we got in, we went to eat in Ludington and the place had a band. To make a long story short, there was a rather unattractive lady there who considered herself very attractive and an excellent dancer. To borrow from Jeff Foxworthy, "She looked like a bunch of raccoons in a burlap sack." This is not really news in any bar on a Friday night. The disturbing part was her outfit was white with a black pattern that made her look exactly like my "White Tiger" spoon.
Henceforth, the "White Tiger" spoon will be known as "Fugly Dancer".
On the water at 515 and setup 3 miles south of the harbor in 130fow and started trolling SE. 100’SWR reg Red Hook Pink Tiger fired at 145fow and doubled up with a nice bow on mono board and red flasher with blk/purple and that would go again for anther bow later. Missed the next 3 bites, 3set 35loc Orange Bechhold Blue longtail (eventually 1 for 5!), 45’SWR reg Green Tiger and 90’ White Opti dodger/glow/LBB. It was slower than last Sat and few marks and no bait to be seen. Friends doing well about 3mi north so zigged and zagged 150-185 picking off one here, one there along the way with not particular depth the best. We kept changing board lures with nadda on 5 color and Orange Tiger and changed to reg dbl Orange crush with a drive by. 8 color, nadda with dbl purple spook, yellow Tiger so for a 7 color with Opti Mt Dew orange and dble aqua nadda. Changed the 10 color from mag Bloody death to reg Dble Purple spook and finally bit with a mag Green Tiger. Stud setups for the day grn Opti with glow/silver and double aqua rigger down 90’ 6 for 10, 45’ SWR reg green Tiger 5 for 8 and 4 color orange Bechhold blue longtail 3 for 3. Wire Dipsys were dead and worked them on a 1.5 set from 75 to 150loc with various flasher flys. Stuck on a reg Blue Alewife 95loc 1 for 1. The other 3 set Dipsy also dead so put a reg Green Tiger 150loc 1 for 1. 2 color red dodger purple fly 1 for 1, 3 color aqua coho candy 1 for 1. Temp at the harbor 54 and 44.6 in 180 and 40.6 down 90 trolling at 1.8-2 on the Depth Raider. Fish were scattered and missed a bunch of bites and drive bys. Quite surprised how deep the coho are coming. I’m still looking of the first king of the year. It was a great day on flat seas with 4 bows, 1 LT and 14 coho and over 30 bites. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard 5-18-2010 I now have the Walker TripZ Diver in size 40, silver in stock. I ordered these in February, I would think it was me but I am almost the only one on the net with them, and the other guys are out of stock. What a mess down in the gulf. I don't think I am anywhere near being a 'tree hugger", but being a sportsman gives you an appreciation of our environment. I think there is a place for oil drilling, it just does not seem to me like the care and caution required has been taken by all the parties. I want to know why the Secretary of Energy (or whoever is responsible for overseeing this stuff), who has had over a year to get his house in order, has not been given a box to put his stuff into. During the last Oil shortage there was a bunch of talk about drilling in the Great Lakes. I was against it then, as it did not seem to me to be worth it to risk the largest source of fresh water on earth for a total of about 2 1/2 days worth of oil for the US. I was at a career fair with my kids and an oil company representative told me I was "short sighted and narrow minded" and that the oil industry has come a long way in safety and environmental responsibility. Well, in the slight chance that you read this, pal, I hope you are driving down to gulf coast to help clean up your mess.
5-11-2010 I just got my fishing license online, don't forget!
I just updated these:
Michigan E-License Wisconsin E-License Illinois E-License Indiana E-License Ohio E-License New York E-License
They can be found any time on my "Useful Links" page on the left.
While I'm at it, time to check the expiration on those flares, and the registration on the boat. Besides DUI, those are probably the most tickets they write every year.
5-10-2010 Due to customer requests, There is now a version of the Double Purple Spook and Mountain Dew Spook with a super glow back and UV BLAST! Red Hook Tackle 2010 Colors
Weather put the Harbor Beach MDA Can-Can Salmon/Trout Tournament off until Saturday. You can still get in on this great event.
5-7-2010 Fishing the Harbor Beach MDA Can-Can Salmon/Trout Tournament this weekend and want a hot tip? One of the top teams asked me to bring 6 Magnum Chicken Pox Spoons. I wonder what they found out pre-fishing?
5-6-2010 We now have the Walker TripZ Divers in Black
5-3-2010 We now have the new Offshore Snap Weight System in stock
Red Hook Tackle Green Tiger is still burning up the lake. It has replaced Chicken Pox as the #1 Spoon, something I thought I would never see.
5-2-2010 Despite the winds yesterday we managed to get Skip's boat to Ludington and put in the water. We wanted to get out but the weather and schedule would not cooperate.
4-30-2010 Hey - anyone reading the news this week want to bring up the idea of drilling for oil in the Great Lakes and how safe it would be?
4-29-2010 It's been a big week on the store. I had to spend this morning doing inventory and ordering stuff. I have a couple hundred of the new spoons all painted, just have to "hook 'em" and package them.
4-28-2010 Once got to the hill marked a little pod of bait down 70 in 80fow and we had a number of baits deep looking for kings. When we hit 105 nothing on the screen so headed back in to the edge. Once at 80fow started marking fish again. Trolled south another 20min and found a pod of coho. We went 6 for seven in the next 20 min and ended up throwing back ½ of a double. The mono boards each went, both 2 colors and 3 set dipsys at 30loc Bechhold and blue long tail twice and Aqua Candy. We boated 21 Coho and missed 5-6 drive bys and 3 hookups. Only one bite that was bigger than the Coho. They are running typical 2.5-3.5# and one was over 4. These are the best eating fish of the year and 3 out of the four of us are cooking it for supper tonight. Tight lines and full coolers, Grey Beard
4-27-2010 Ford shows a profit of $2 Billion, double expectations but their stock is down. Isn't it great that so many mentally challenged people find work on Wall Street?
4-26-2010 This video has a little bit of language, but let's just say it is used appropriately, I would have used worse.
4-25-2010 I came across this the other day. Every once in a while there is a debate over if it is legal for a boat owner to accept help in paying for fuel, or does that make him a "charter".
Well, according to the Coast Guard: (From http://vbsf.net/coastgaurd/Operators.pdf)
"Passenger for hire" means a passenger for whom consideration is contributed as a condition of carriage. "Consideration" means an economic benefit or profit including payment of money or donation of fuel, food, beverage, or supplies. It does not include a voluntary sharing of the actual expense of the voyage (46 CFR 175.400).
The way I read this, if you are taking your buddy out fishing and you say "you HAVE to chip in for gas", you are a charter. If your buddy says, "can I chip in for gas?", you are not.
Personally I think the whole subject is covered under "good manners", but that's just me.
4-22-2010 You can read the "Sea Grant West Michigan Angler's News" here. For you Michigan Anglers, there are instructions on how you can help the biologists study the natural v. planted fish ratio.
We all do a lot of complaining about our DNR, but if we don't do our part, we are part of the problem.
Super Glow Bloody Blue Tiger
4-20-2010 This is the last of the new 2010 colors, along with Double Purple Spook and Mountain Dew Spook Super Glows.
4-18-2010 Introducing the 2010 Raider spoons. Many of this year's colors are based off of the very successful Green Tiger. Since several of the spoon companies out there are using a Tiger Pattern like the Green Tiger's, I decided to make a more unique one. The new Wizard Spoons are based on a very successful version of a classic spoon not available any more. I have a couple more surprises coming up pretty quick.
No, not the latest catch by a Raider Spoon, just a cool picture of a Wale Shark (Not a man-eating catfish as the email claimed).
4-17-2010 On one of the message boards there was a question about refurbishing Offshore Releases. Our Pro-Staff "Greybeard" posted this reply: "I re-did all my OR16s over the winter and was not a tuff job. I put them in a table vice to keep them open. I sharpened a small cheap blade screwdriver to "chisel" out the old rubber. I used a silicone glue to set the new ones."
You can purchase replacement pads for offshore releases here.
4-16-2010 We have G-Fly Stainless Steel wire back in stock now, along with a full line of Woodstock Copper Wire and Lead Core Line
4-15-2010 Tax Day! I am back from my road trip to Wisconsin this morning at 3:30 am. All orders should ship tomorrow. One thought -

4-9-2010 Reminder - The Spring Reel Sale ends Next Thursday, or even sooner as we run out of stock. As of right now, we are down to 4 Daiwa Sealine LCX Reels and 2 Daiwa Saltist 40 High Speed Reels and 1 Daiwa Sealine 47LCA Reel .
4-8-2010 I was just reading a boat magazine and it had a couple of questions from readers.
One was about trailer lights intermittently working, then not. They talked about connections and grounds, and that was fine, but a big tip for all of you that tow any type of trailer: Go to your local auto parts store and buy some "Dielectric Grease". Apply the stuff to the connectors and it will prevent corrosion and a lot of your problems. The stuff is like Vaseline, so it sticks well and keeps moisture out. I keep some on the boat and use it on the downrigger plugs.
The second question was about Silicone (DOT 5) brake fluid. Silicone brake fluid is used by people with antique or collectable vehicles because it does not absorb water like regular brake fluid. You should know that even as your vehicle sits, the brake fluid absorbs moisture and after several years the moisture content can get so that the fluid will boil easily, causing you to lose some or all of your braking. Fortunately, when you get a brake job and the brakes are bled, this prevents this from happening. If you own a '55 Chevy and drive it in the Dream Cruise and rarely in bad weather, you could go 20 years between brake jobs, Silicone might be a good choice.
For normal users and in the case of this question, people with boat trailers, Silicone is a bad choice. Since it does not absorb water, water sinks to the bottom wherever it is and will rust the wheel cylinder or caliper. Large amounts of free water can boil suddenly and cause a brake failure.
If that was too boring for you to read, read the manufacturer's recommendation and use the much cheaper and readily available DOT 3 brake fluid. You should periodically have those trailer brakes bled and maintained.
4-7-2010 All of our Opti-Tackle Swivels, Snaps and Pigtails are in stock now, as are Snubbers.
The center strip ends short so that it will not interfere with water flow to the jet motor.

3-23-2010 I know, not fishing related, but I thought this was funny as heck: 20 Points To Ponder
March 22, 2010
Dear Fellow Contestants, Sponsors, Media, and Volunteers,
Due to situations beyond our control, we have to cancel the Thumb Area Offshore Challenge Fishing Tournament for 2010. Port Austin Harbor will be undergoing extensive renovations which will adversely affect its usage for our contestants this year and Grindstone would have very limited dockage availability that could not accommodate the full tournament. We apologize for the delay in notifying you but we wanted to get all of the facts before we made our decision.
We do plan on having the tournament in 2011! Please mark your calendars for June 18th & 19th, 2011. The captains meeting will be held the evening of June 17th. The harbor renovations taking place this year should definitely enhance your tournament experience in the future, making it even better!Thank you for your understanding and if you have any questions, please feel free to call us at our numbers noted below. Sincerely, Dave Dybowski, Co Chairman Larry Hartwick, Co Chairman
3-22-2010 I have had several questions about the size of the Charge 'n Glow. As you can see, the unit has a cavity of about 6" x 1 3/4" by about 1 1/2" deep (3/4" on each side). It is made from a hard case for glasses.
Plenty of room for a magnum spoon, it will cover about 80% of the tape on an 8" flasher, you just clamp it over the flasher as shown.
I have already found that you can press the button with it open and it makes a pretty fair flashlight in a pinch. |

MUCC declares "Michigan Meat
Eaters Day" |
|
|
"First we have the Humane Society of the
United States setting up shop in
Michigan. Now we have another animal
rights organization getting play in the
Capitol. The March 20th
Meatout Day is a national campaign of
FARM, which stands for Farm Animal
Rights Movement. This only confirms
what MUCC has been saying for months
that the animal rights groups are
looking for ways to attack our outdoors
and agricultural lifestyles. And we're
not going to have it," said MUCC Deputy
Director and Michigan OutofDoors
Magazine editor Tony Hansen. "The fact
that our government has chosen to
partner with an animal rights
organization is troubling. Perhaps many
people, including the Governor, do not
realize the true agendas of groups with
deceptively innocent-sounding names like
FARM and the Humane Society of the
United States. Michigan Meat Eaters Day
is a day not only to enjoy the healthy,
time-honored traditions of eating meat
but to also raise awareness about these
groups and their hidden agendas."
FARM is not simply a group looking to
ensure better treatment of farm animals.
It is an organization that promotes a
vegan lifestyle and opposes the use of
animals for food in any form. One of its
latest outreach programs targets kids
and includes a special website with a
graphic that equates animals raised on
farms to slavery.
On its own Web Site, FARM claims
individuals should "evolve to a
compassionate diet of fruits,
vegetables, and whole grains" and
suggests people should wholly transform
their diets from "meat and dairy in
mainstream grocery stores, restaurants,
and catering operations" to vegan-based
diets and establishments. Not only is
partnering with this organization an
insult to hunters, but to Michigan's
second and third largest industries -
agriculture and tourism. FARM also has
strong ties to the Humane Society of the
United States, the nation's largest and
wealthiest anti-hunting, anti-fishing
animal rights organization. In fact, the
Meatout Day declaration came on a day
when Jill Fritz, a lobbyist from the
Humane Society of the United States,
testified to House lawmakers about what
she considers to be the evils of
hunting. Fritz also served as the
National Coordinator for World Farm
Animal Day which was sponsored by FARM.
"Like FARM, the Humane Society of the
United States uses deception to convince
its supporters that it's something that
it is not," said Hansen. "HSUS has
nothing to do with Michigan's local
humane shelters that do a great service
by providing a place for stray pets to
be placed in homes. HSUS is a lobby
group based in Washington, D.C. whose
mission is to end hunting, fishing and
virtually all forms of animal use. HSUS
has a $100 million budget and according
to its 2008 IRS tax return, less than
one half of one percent of that budget
actually went to hands-on animal

3-16-2010 (Jeez, it's March and I am still typing 2009. I should just start typing 2011, maybe I'll get it by December)
Now, I think everybody should pay their taxes. I pay mine, I don't like it, but I do. This here is just mental:

3-12-2010 Jerry sent me those pictures and they looked really cool. Just click on the picture for a better view.
I am doing some remodeling at home now, Jerry thought these would cheer me up.
Check out this new product, the Rapala Charge 'n Glow
for charging your glow lures.

3-10-2010 Yesterday we went to the Public Museum in Grand Rapids and ate lunch at the B.O.B., actually at "Bobarino's" which has seriously good thin-crust pizza. I don't know what was better, the food or the name.
The serious fishermen were out in force on the Grand River. It won't be any time at all before us wimps will be ready to go.
Jerry continues with the boat project, currently glassing the bottom
This is one of those projects you need a lot more patience than I have to ever complete.
3-8-2010 We have had an extremely long stretch of wonderful weather here. Every day has been sunny and in the low 40's F (4.5 - 7 C). Unfortunately I live on a dirt road, apparently Oakland County, MI has not discovered tar and sand. I washed my truck last Wednesday and as of this morning it was still pretty reasonably clean. As soon as it rains it will be an awful red/brown two-tone from the windows down as the road turns to muck.
I talked to a friend's wife today, who told me her husband had gotten the boat out this weekend. "He is like a little kid" she said.
3-4-2010 Welcome to Michigan Summer! 40 degrees and sunny and I saw someone in shorts. Maybe it will get everyone thinking about fishing.
The best Salmon Fishing Show in the Great Lakes area is being held this weekend in Birch Run, MI by the Flint Steelheaders. Too warm to ice fish, too much ice to fish, this is the best place to be this weekend.
Unfortunately I do not have a booth this year, I am not doing any shows this year, but there will be plenty of other things to see.
2-25-2009 I have had several fishing clubs purchase 100 packs of the Offshore Planer Board Releases. This is a great way to save some cash. Get with your buddies who run big boards and split the cost, saving you big $$$ over buying smaller packs.
Summer's almost here
...
2-22-2009 I don't know if I should be happy for this guy or jealous. A new customer from Washington State sent me these photos of one of his Canadian friends. In case you were wondering, that is a 74 lb. King.
Actually, I am kind of jealous of the green grass and flowers. We got about 8 inches of "winter wonderland" today.
2-19-2010 One year ago today was Jenny's last litter. "Bear" is now about 70 lbs, "Tyler" the yellow is with my brother and doing well and I saw pictures today of the littlest pup, "Boomer" who has grown up well.
The two litters were a lot of fun but I must say I'm kind of glad I don't have to face that again this year.
If you are interested in a Lab pup, contact the Rooster Ranch and Nick will be happy to set you up with the best dogs I have ever owned.
I got these pictures in an email today. Twin albinos have got to be pretty rare.
2-10-2010 As you can see, some new products are here, some great new reels.
The new Sealine LCX Reels and the new Saltist reels have GREAT new drags and anyone who has spent an eternity pulling in lead core or copper will LOVE the Saltist High Speed reels.
Check them out!

2-8-2010 Call the
White House on Monday!
On Monday in Washington, D.C., President Obama's
staff is holding a closed-door meeting about
what actions the federal government might take
to stop Asian carp from entering the Great
Lakes. While you can't see what happens in the
meeting, you can call the White House at
202-456-1414 to voice your opinion.
Make Your Opinion Clear: Close The Locks And
Stop Asian Carp From Entering The Great Lakes
If everyone who signed up at StopAsianCarp.com
called the White House at 202-456-1414, the
President would hear from thousands of people in
the Midwest who want the locks closed and the
Great Lakes protected.
Call Monday: 202-456-1414
So, on Monday morning, please grab your phone
and dial 202-456-1414. Call the White House.
Tell them you know there is a closed-door
meeting about Asian carp today but you want your
voice heard.
Permanently close the locks in Chicago before
Asian carp can get into Lake Michigan and
beyond, ruining our lakes and killing thousands
of jobs.
Rumors of a federal plan that would leave the
locks open most days have begun to be published
in media reports. For example, under one
scenario the locks would be open four days per
week and closed three days. This makes no more
sense than keeping criminals in jail four days a
week and hoping nothing bad happens on the other
three days. When will the emphasis be placed on
protecting the Great Lakes instead of the narrow
interests of one state?
Thank You For Your Help
Your vocal efforts on this issue have helped
raise the level of attention paid to this crisis
here in Michigan, across the Midwest and now in
Washington. As our multi-state lawsuit continues
before the U.S. Supreme Court, we can only hope
that officials in charge will change their
stance and announce immediate steps to close the
locks and move toward a permanent separation of
the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins.
With your help, we can make that happen.
Sincerely,
![]()

Punxsutawney Phil is held by Ben Hughes after
emerging from his burrow on Gobblers Knob in
Punxsutawney, Pa., to see his shadow and
forecast six more weeks of winter.
Had he not seen his shadow we would only have a
month and a half of winter left.
2-1-2020 I grew up thinking that everyone had a can of Bag Balm hanging around. I use it for minor cuts and sores on the dogs because it sticks to the wound even after they lick it, and I have never figured out how to keep a dog from licking a wound. When I was a kid at my grandparent's farm if you were good you got bag balm, if you got hurt being bad you got iodine.
Well, the stuff is 100 years old and still going strong: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100131/ap_on_re_us/us_bag_balm
1-29-2010 I am passing this email along for your information. Of course it is a political statement by a politician. My printing it here is not in any way an endorsement of anyone, just information.
Late yesterday the Obama administration set a
February 8th date for a meeting with the governors from
Michigan and Wisconsin. If Governor Granholm can get the
locks closed in such a summit it would be good news for
Michigan and the Great Lakes. Meanwhile, I will continue to
pursue all avenues to ensure we protect the Great Lakes and
our jobs from the threat of Asian Carp.
The U.S. Supreme Court is still considering Michigan's
request to close Chicago-area locks connecting carp-infested
waterways to Lake Michigan and has set a deadline for other
states and interested parties to submit briefs by February
19. President Obama continues to defend the narrow interests
of his home state but others are beginning to act.
Over the course of the last week, thanks in large part to
your efforts, new bi-partisan efforts to protect the Lakes
have been launched by lawmakers in our State and Nation's
capitol.
Congressman Camp and Senator Stabenow launched the CARP Act,
Michigan's full Congressional delegation has signed a letter
asking the President's administration to act quickly and
state lawmakers have formed the Michigan House Shoreline
Caucus and are preparing to file an amicus brief with the
Supreme Court backing Michigan's request to protect jobs and
close the locks.
Below you will find links to recent media coverage of these
and other positive developments.
Unfortunately, there is still much more work to be done. The
most recent carp DNA evidence, found in Lake Michigan,
indicates this invasive species may be setting up shop
inside the Great Lakes as we speak. The front door to Lake
Michigan remains wide open even as these waterborne aliens
threaten to devastate the Lakes' $7 billion fishery and
hundreds of thousands of jobs connected to the health of the
Lakes. The need for each of us to act has never been
greater.
Thank YOU for standing up and making a difference.
Sincerely,
Mike Cox
Attorney General (MI)

1-25-2010 The above came to me labeled "Michigan Ice Fishing", but of course it could be anywhere. It looks extravagant, but I am sure he has less money in that than I have in my boat.
One thing for sure, I bet he does not leave that out on the ice when there is a possibility of a thaw!
This one made me smile:
Dog For Sale
Free to good home. Excellent guard dog. Owner
cannot afford to feed him anymore, as there are
no more drug pushers, thieves, murderers, or
molesters left in the neighborhood for him to
eat. Most
of them knew Jethro only by his street
name; 'Holy $&%#!!!!!!'
1-11-2009 I reached a milestone here, the barn is now completely insulated! It took quite a bit of work and some help from the kids home from college to get it done. Two layers of Styrofoam give the walls an "R Value" of 11.8. You can already tell how much less the heater comes on, and that is big $$$$.
I answer to some questions, no I am not doing any shows this year. Shows take an enormous amount of time and even worse, money. We have 2 kids in college so some things have to go.
What we do have is some exciting new products coming for this year and some exciting promotional programs in conjunction with some local fishing tournaments.
1-6-2009 This is a petition to keep
the shipping canal closed in the Illinois River
so the Asian Carp can't get into the Great
Lakes.
