Happy Birthday America!

There was a WWII vet at the diner having breakfast after the parade today in his uniform.  We live in a pretty cool country where a “GI Joe” private has three people try and buy his breakfast.

We are living in some tough times, but we need to remember that we are the lucky ones, we are free.  Other people want to come here and be like us, we have every reason to be proud.

You may not like the current administration, but you can yell and scream and burn flags and send emails calling him a communist and anything you like, and no secret police are coming to your door in the middle of the night.  Tonight people WILL disappear in places like Iran.  Are we perfect, of course not.  We are a darn sight closer than most of the world.

If it were not for guy like that man in the diner, Dick Boyagian, and for than matter my Uncle and my Dad, the war could have taken a few months longer, Nazi Germany could have developed the bomb, and our lives would be very different.

We need to insist to our leaders that our soldiers and vets get the best benefits and care available.  We have a bunch of “chicken hawks” that love to declare war and wave the flag but when it comes time to fund VA Hospitals have something else to do.  I say that a 20 year old with a closed head injury should get the same care as Ted Kennedy with his brain cancer.  Actually, I think Ted should get the same care as anyone else serving life for killing their secretary, but that’s another story.  Send one of those kids to Ted’s doctors and send Ted to a VA hospital and see if things don’t get fixed.

Guess who I am talking about?  As we used to say, “you get 3 guesses and the first two don’t count.”

If you are a fan, don’t bother to get your hackles up.  I just don’t care about him.  The only thing that did concern me about him, that he could molest more children, is now solved.  So now I don’t care at all.  I never cared for his “music” or “dancing” and I could name 50 people I think were more influential and talented in those fields.  That, however, I will concede is entirely my opinion and entirely subjective.

I will suggest that, unless you are a close realtive or he owed you money, that if you are really broken up about this you really need to get a life.  I mean, seriously, spend some time with your real family.

Can’t we agree, however, that with the economy, 2 wars (we are not out of Iraq yet), Iran and North Korea with Nuclear ambitions and very unstable, Pakistan a Nuclear Power in danger of being taken over by the Taliban, a global pandemic, that spending 3/4 of the NBC Nightly News (I recorded the news that night and kept track of the time) talking about the death of a recording artist whose last hit record was released like 20 years ago is just plain wrong?
